If you follow me and read my thoughts on aquatic plants you might know that I have warned others to stay clear of Water Celery. Yes, of course it is a great filter for the water but it just goes crazy and once its worked its way into the rocks it is practically impossible to remove it completely. It feels like I will be forever fighting it from overtaking all the other plants I want to have growing in that spot. But just recently, I’ve had a Water Celery Epiphany!
Water Celery Epiphany
Here comes the epiphany……This last week we cleaned a pond that was a great example of when Water Celery is THE BEST! What is the difference?
Our pond has a stream with shallow spaces that can easily allow Water Celery to go crazy (above). The pond in the photo below has some a steep and rocky side that would not be the easiest place put in aquatic plants. This photos does not do the steep side justice!
Water Celery is the magic plant in this situation! I am not sure where it was planted originally, but it was probably placed near the water line. Then it grew through the rocks into all the spaces that would be difficult to plant anything. It beautifully softens up the rocks and provides fantastic water filtration! Since the area it is growing in does not have other plants it is not squeezing anything out. I realize now that Water Celery is actually the perfect plant in some situations! Its roots get through tight spaces and don’t mind traveling the distance to keep water going to its feathery green foliage.
The photo below shows the pond with less water and you can see the steepness of the side more easily. They were still working on the pond here. You should see it all put together, it’s gorgeous!
This is the Forget Me Nots in the stream that the Water Celery is always trying to get into.
If you are not sure if your pond is just right for Water Celery, I say hold off! But if your pond is deep with no or barely any shallow shelves, this is the magical plant for your pond! Ready to learn a lot about Aquatic Plants that you use in Colorado? Check out all of our Plant Galleries HERE.
