When is the best time to clean the pond?
There are several factors to consider regarding when to clean out the pond. Know when to clean out the pond:
- If there are fish in the pond, waiting until the water is above 50 degrees is a good idea. Once the water warms up to 50 and consistently stays that warm, their metabolisms and immune systems work better. Moving fish to a different tank while the cleaning is being done is not a problem when their immune systems are up and running. Here in Colorado, this is usually in May. However, as I sit and write this it is the 2nd week in April, and was 85 degrees today!
- When there are a lot of leaves and other decaying matter in the pond.
- When there are 3 inches or more of fish poop that are contributing to algae or even the movement of the fish then, YES, you should clean out the pond!

Typically, a koi pond needs to be cleaned every year, in the spring. A super healthy pond with a great ecosystem and regular maintenance may only need to be cleaned every other or even every 3 years.
Depending on the weather, the last week of April through the 3rd week in May is a perfect time to have the pond cleaned. If you need to wait a little longer that is fine too.

Kristi's Tips
A pond should have 40 to 60% of the surface area coverage of plants. It helps keep the whole environment more healthy.
Read about the plants before you put them in. Many aquatic plants are invasive and can be a nightmare later to control.
Plants in a pond are the best experiment! You don’t have to water them! Some of them will make it, and some of them might not, but when the right plants for your pond are established, they will make your whole system POP with beauty!
