Pond Deicer a Saga of Caution

An Aquagarden pond deicer frozen in the ice

The cold weather is here to stay – for a while. Don’t forget to take pond deicer caution.

I had purchased a couple different deicers to test them out. A Turbo Pond Deicer very similar to the Aquascape deicer but it costs less. I was (and still am) excited about this deicer because it could be a good alternative that has a few things I like more. It has a longer cord and a built in GFI. However, a client needed a deicer and I didn’t have another one on hand. So when my brand new Turbo deicer came in, instead of putting it in our pond we put it in a client’s pond. (No big deal, I’ll order another one!)

I had also ordered an Aquagarden deicing vent as well. It sat in my office for a long time before it was time to put it into the pond. It sat like this in my office and I even took a photo of it before putting into the pond. I liked the blue:

Someone put it in later (I don’t remember who and I am  not blaming them because I should have realized!).  We noticed that the deicer didn’t seem to be working very well.  The middle was starting to freeze but was still slushy.  I felt the blue part and it was warm, so it was working and I wondered what I was missing.  Then I noticed the warning label on the side was upside down….

I laughed out loud as I realized the deicer was UPSIDE DOWN! It should look like the photo below.  By then the deicer was frozen in place and I couldn’t get it out to turn it right side up.

It was supposed to be this direction!

Back to the Turbo Pond Deicer

The client who has the Turbo Deicer called to let me know that something was wrong with it. Israel went out and found that the built-in GFI is a box with a plug on it.  The box makes it too large to plug into the outdoor electrical box so an extension was used.  This particular extension has a 2-way splitter.  The open outlet was snowed on, thus tripping the GFI.  The outlet box is also open to snow.   Moral of the story:  Cover open outlets or extensions with a fake rock to avoid popping the GFI.  Moral of the story for my crew – take fake rocks with you in the truck and offer them to people who need them.

Reordered the Pond Deicer

I put in a replacement order for the pond deicer I had put in a client’s pond.  Boy was my daughter in New York city surprised when she she received it on her doorstep!   Yes, I quickly ordered it and didn’t notice my daughter’s address had pre populated in the address line!

If your pond has frozen over completely, because your ordered pond deicer was accidentally mailed to your daughter in New York City, this question may have crossed your mind.  If it did, find the answer to “Should I melt pond ice with a flame thrower?” in this article.
