Does Your Pond Need Activated Carbon?

Using Activated Carbon in Your Pond

Putting in a bag of Activated carbon can help when the water has a lot of tannins.  That means the water is clear, but has a brown tint, sort of like tea.

Activated carbon is used by water purification plants, aquarium owners and even in air purification systems.   It can be used in ponds too!

It s’ tiny pores trap dissolved impurities as water passes through them absorbing the dissolved contaminants and discoloration that can make pond water look less appealing. The activated carbon  polishes the water and improves overall clarity.

When Should Activated Carbon Be Used?

Activated carbon is especially useful:

  • After pond medication treatments to remove residual medications
  • When water has a yellow, tea-colored, or stained appearance
  • To help remove odors ( although the pond may need a full cleanout if it really smells. AND, keep in mind if the fish are spawing it will smell “fishy” for a few days, but then it will subside.)
  • When you feel you need to improve overall water clarity and appearance
  • After an algae treatment to help remove dissolved organic compounds,

How Much Activated Carbon Should You Use?

A general guideline is to use approximately 1 pound of activated carbon for every 1,000 gallons of pond water. However, always follow the manufacturer’s recommendations, as different carbon products may have varying capacities.

If your pond has recently been treated with medications or has significant discoloration, additional carbon may be beneficial for a short period.

Where Should Activated Carbon Be Placed?

For best results, place the activated carbon in your bio fall if you have one or another area where water flows through the media consistently.  It just needs to be where the water is moving through it. If possible, put it slow moving water  to maximize contact time and allows the carbon to remove dissolved contaminants effectively.

How does the carbon come?

Most activated carbon products are packaged inside a plastic bag that is placed within a mesh bag.  I would use gloves.  Sometimes the carbon dust is even on the outside of the plastic bag.

Before installation:

  1. Remove the activated carbon from the outer plastic bag.
  2. Leave the carbon inside the mesh bag.
  3. Place the mesh bag directly into the bio fall filter or designated filter chamber.
  4. Make sure it is submerged.

The mesh bag allows water to flow through the carbon while keeping the media contained for easy removal.

How Long Should Activated Carbon Stay in the Pond Filter?

Activated carbon is most effective during the first few weeks of use. It should remain in the filter for 2 to 4 weeks.

The carbon will become saturated and can no longer effectively adsorb contaminants. After 4 weeks remove and discard the old carbon. Fresh activated carbon can be installed if continued treatment is desired.

Activated carbon is a temporary assistant for making the water more clear. But it is not a magic wand that will magically fix everything.  Does your pond have all the elements it needs to be heathy?  Read about the elements in a healthy pond, or as I like to call them,

When used properly, activated carbon can be a valuable tool for restoring crystal-clear pond water and improving the overall appearance of your pond. Remember to change it out in 4 weeks!
