Know your planting zone. 

When considering any type of plants, you need to know what growing zone you are in.  That way, you will know if a plant is perennial (will die back during the winter but come back int he spring) or annual (you have to plant it annually because it will die int he winter. ) I live near Boulder, Colorado.  I am in zone 5. Most places on the Colorado Front Range are zone 5.
